Power management problems in Windows Me

My computer runs Windows Me, upgraded from Windows 98 SE. I find that it won't wake up from standby, but displays only a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the top lefthand corner. All I can do is switch the machine off and then on again, after which Windows irritatingly asks me, as it failed to respond the last few times it went on standby, would I like it not to go on standby in future? But I don't. I want it to wake up, as it should, every time without fail. I think this is a bug that needs fixing, but I have found nothing on the Microsoft website. Any suggestions?

While we can't rule out the possibility of a bug in Windows Me, it's also possible that your unnamed computer, which presumably predates Me as it originally ran Windows 98 SE, may not be fully compliant with the latest power management specs. These have been continually revised, as it has been a difficult thing for Microsoft to get right.

When Windows Me was released, Microsoft stated that some computers for which the Suspend/resume feature worked under 98 might fail using Me. This is why we advise people to resist the temptation to upgrade their operating systems if everything is working right.

Another possibility is that a hardware device or its drivers are incompatible with the power management specs. It would be worth making sure you have the latest drivers for each device. But if there are bugs or incompatibilities, only Microsoft or the device manufacturer can fix them. If they haven't done so and aren't intending to, all we can suggest is that you go back to using Windows 98.
